Experimental films with vvvv

Some very impressive showreels are made using a tool you might not know yet: vvvv.

What started out as a software tool for multimedia artists, is still actively developed and has significantly matured since its early days at Meso Digital Media Systems Design. Today vvvv is a full-featured software application, available for free (for non-commercial use). Vvvv can be best described as a suite of software tools (triggers, filters, inputs and outputs) that can be chained to produce the desired results. Overall it more resembles a programming language than a typical video application. It’s extreme modularity is somewhat difficult to understand but also enables the user to create everything imaginable ranging from images, videos, realtime patterns and even raw data streams.

The strong bias on realtime-applications is why vvvv is very popular among VJs. Numerous well-known projects deployed vvvv, as an example, vvvv was also used to bring the Fußball-Globus, an installation by André Heller, to life. If you are brave enough to master the initial steep learning curve of vvvv’s GUI, the software is worth a try to produce abstract, experimental or impressive films you wouldn’t have been able to produce with another software.
