Tarsem’s new film
The Unforgettable, announced for 2008, is the new film Tarsem Singh will direct (is directing?) for Warner Bros. The piece will also mark Singh’s return to the studio world and we’ll see if it will play up to expectations after the mediocre results of Singh’s earlier job, The Cell.
The Fall, sic years later and an imdb top-rated but indie produced film, was no help in curing Singh’s loose relationship with the blockbuster producer’s from Tinseltown. The fact that The Fall was coproduced by Radical Media, just another hint on Singh’s closer relationship with TV Commercials than Hollywood cinema.
Over the years Singh has worked up quite a roster of music videos and tv commercials, mostly under the moniker Tarsem. A recent example of such work is the Brad Pitt centered TV Commercial for Telecom provider “Alice” from Germany. Also, the spot is an example of Singh restricting himself to an universal, not-so-visually-styled film look. We’ll see how The Unfogettable will turn out. Will Tarsem continue to elaborate his style, which can be best described as a Bollywood-Nightmare-Pipe-Dream? The analogies between The Cell and The Fall tempt me to think so. A lot of whites, red, crazy headwear and spectacular costumes.
Aside from the great visuals, the problem, especially with The Cell, was the script. As the Hollywood Reporter tells us, The Unforgettable (more “The” here…) is based on the computer game Condemned: Criminal Origins and will follow the changing luck of a cop climaxing in fights with aliens. Ambitious… As many other films adapted from videogames have such a hard time, let’s hope this project is a well written piece of solid filmmaking.
